Our Philosophy
Successful weight management requires an engaged client who takes responsibility, not only for doing their "homework" but for being able to work collaboratively with their team in choosing goals, devising plans, and solving problems that arise. Sometimes, we need to tell someone that they aren't ready for our program, and would benefit from additional medical evaluation or some counseling to help them get ready. We're honest with people. As experts in weight management and related issues, we know the territory, and we know that not everyone is ready, willing and able to complete this journey. But for those who are, we are here to work with them.
When it comes to weight problems people often think the solution is just to tell the person to “eat less and exercise more.” However, this is like suggesting that alcoholism can be fixed by simply telling someone to “drink less,” or curing depression by saying “Don’t worry, be happy.” If it was that simple there would be a lot fewer overweight people (or problem drinkers, or depressives).
Most people want to lose weight to improve their health, prevent future health problems, to develop a more active lifestyle, and to feel better about themselves. With so many good reasons to make the change, what stops them? That is what our multidisciplinary coaching program is all about.
There are many approaches to weight management, including diet and exercise prescriptions, weight loss medications, and surgery. Our Multidisciplinary Coaching Program is for people who understand that while all those tools can be helpful, they must be used within a framework of lifestyle change. Changing habits is needed for long-term weight control and this has a lot to do with motivation and effective strategy.
Are you a good candidate for our program? If you are a good candidate, you realize that it takes time and support to achieve the desired behaviour and attitude changes and for these changes to be well established. The journey takes as long as it takes, and there really is no shortcut. But remember, this is an exciting process of self-discovery and re-definition, in which better weight control is one important part of your story of transformation!

GETTING STARTEDThe weight control journey, like any journey, starts with deciding to embark. Then we need to prepare and make sure we’re ready to go.
A good place to start the journey is to become clear about what it will be like, including the obstacles you may encounter, and how confident you are in your ability to achieve your goal. That gives you a good indication of what’s in store. We created an exercise called Starting the Weight Management Journey to help you take this kind of inventory, and prepare for a successful journey. |
